Memorial Markers

Each marker consists of a white cross topped with an American flag which is inserted into the ground along numerous major roads within Lumpkin County and closest to the city of Dahlonega. On the Memorial Marker is the veteran’s name, and in which war or conflict they served if any.

History

The Memorial Marker program was started in 2000 with 28 markers and 6 volunteers. In 2017 we placed 789 markers utilizing 14 teams with an average of 8 to 10 volunteers on each team. Memorial Markers are rolled out one week prior to Memorial Day and taken down one week after the 4th of July, and also one week before Veteran’s Day and taken down one week after.

A small number are displayed in memory of September 11, 2001 and also in recognition of December 7th 1941 and then are returned to storage.
